Mindful Drawing - Half-day Workshop on the Saluda

$80.00

Saturday, April 20, 2024
9:00 am - 2:00 pm
(arrival and coffee from 9:00 - 9:30)

$80 (plus $5 parking fee)

Experience the sensations of spring through drawing, as we gather for mindful seeing and marking at the Saluda Shoals Park in Columbia, SC. This half-day workshop is a playful exploration of a range of drawing methods with nature as our focus, and is open to adults at any level. Younger participants (14+) are welcome to register if accompanied by an adult.

I share highly-accessible techniques for drawing through all the senses, connecting not just to what you see, but to the sounds, scents, and tactility of place. This approach to drawing is about finding pleasure and satisfaction through an embodied creative process, discovering flow, calm, and focus through line, material, and color.

The 5-hour session combines structured group tutorials on how to translate what you see into drawings that echo your environment, along with time to wander and draw independently. Our setting is an open air shelter perched above the Saluda River, surrounded by trees with plenty of space to wander and draw. This is truly open to all levels of experience and interest - if you’re unsure about whether it’s a good fit for you, please reach out for a quick conversation.

There will be coffee, donuts, and a buffet of basic drawing materials on hand (assorted paper, pencils, colored pencils, ink, watercolors, markers, walnut ink, and more). Please bring a sketchbook, any additional materials you may want to use, and a sack lunch.

The workshop is $80 plus a $5 per vehicle parking fee paid at the gate. Restrooms are located about 100 yards from our shelter, requiring a short walk or drive. If you register but cannot attend, I am happy to apply your fees to a future class, but cannot issue refunds.

We will hold the workshop rain or shine! Last year’s thunderstorm made for a truly wonderful drawing atmosphere and I’m actually hoping for rain again :).

Looking forward to drawing with you within delicate golden greens and emerging pinks, riverside birdsong, and soft southern air. Onward into spring!
