Drawing Basics - Series One, Two, and Three

$215.00

For those wanting to launch or deepen their observational and mindful drawing practice, these ongoing series of five classes integrate close seeing with exercises emphasizing line, value, gesture, and proportion. Over the course of each 5-class series, you’ll learn the basics of how to translate what you see into drawn images, with increasing accuracy and satisfaction.

Series One - Observational Tools

Each class is dedicated to a different fundamental drawing concept: line, value, gesture, proportion, perspective, and structure. We do short, accessible exercises that bring all into play, bridging eye movement to the action of your hand. *No experience required.

Tuesdays from noon - 1:15pm EST
February 13, 20, 27 and March 12 and 19, 2024

Series Two - Developing Still Life Drawings

We build on and synthesize the fundamental ways to see and draw, introducing composition and space as we create longer and more developed drawings. *Previous drawing experience is helpful, either from Series One or similar knowledge. Series One is not a prerequisite.

Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6:30pm EST
March 26 and April 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2024

Series Three - Portraiture/Self-Portraiture

With line, value, structure and proportion as our guides, we will explore the dimensions and character of human portraiture, working from others and ourselves in two and three dimensions. *Previous drawing experience is helpful, either from Series One or similar knowledge. Series One or Two are not prerequisites.

Summer 2024 Dates TBA

Classes are small, live, and highly interactive. Each week, I guide and demonstrate a specific approach to observational drawing, using a range of techniques, exercises, and models. Classes are non-judgmental and designed with the beginner in mind, with conversation and room for questions and feedback.

The five-session course is $215. Expect to spend up to $25 on materials, which include a graphite kit, eraser, and sketchbook (available at any art store).

These interactive online sessions are presented via Zoom, and best experienced on a laptop or computer monitor with a large screen and webcam. Please download the free Zoom app on to your computer (www.zoom.us) prior to your first class. Payment is through the link below (PayPal) or personal check (please email me if paying by check).

Classes require a 4-person minimum; if the minimum is not met seven days prior to the first class, your tuition will be refunded.

Please be in touch if you have any questions, and I look forward to drawing with you soon.

Sara S.

From past participants (with more below):

“At this point I have experienced several of Sara’s online drawing workshops. I am someone who does not naturally know how to draw and so have tended to criticize myself in art experiences. Working with Sara I can say that ALL of that is gone! I am not only learning techniques that give me confidence and satisfaction but I am hungry for more.”

“Sara’s classes are motivating and fun. She is an incredibly talented teacher and is skillful in teaching people at all levels. I had no idea how many ways there are to draw!! And a great bonus has been meeting some of the most delightful people who join the classes. Now I have new skills, confidence, motivation and new friends.”
